In interviews with professional movers in the Temecula California area, we have identified some common errors that are easily avoided with proper planning.
Do not start with the items you use daily. This is a problem that few people notice until all of their belongings are in their new home and they cannot find their toothbrush or shoes for work. Have the movers move your stored items first. This would be things like holiday decorations, next season clothing, the box of baby clothes you are saving. Basically, the items you keep in the basement, attic or storage closet. Work your way to the kitchen items and your clothes and things that you use every day. When the truck is unloaded the daily items come off first so you are not digging through seasonal stuff trying to find things you need.
Allow enough time! A weekend day on the last day of the month may look good to you for moving but consider this; that same day looks good for most people who are moving. This means it is a very busy time for moving companies. In order to keep your stress level down, consider if you can move on another day. If you simply cannot move on another day; book your movers well in advance. Make sure you call to confirm the week before and do not underestimate how much time your move will take.
Hire a sitter! People think it is a good idea to move on a day when children are out of school. This means they do not have to stop and pick them up and the children can “help”. Do yourself a favor and hire a sitter to take care of the children until you are ready to take them to the new home. Movers “move” (no pun intended). While carrying boxes and two-wheelers and furniture, a child can be easily hurt if they run in front of a mover who cannot see them. They will interrupt you to be fed, to get a drink, to go to the bathroom and to help them pack. You will find everything will go easier for you if you have someone to care for the children.
Pack a bag! Pack a bag for each member of the family that would equal a three day weekend. Include toiletries, medications, clothes, and essentials like blow dryers and cell phone chargers. Keep these weekenders bags in your car. When your truck is unloaded and you find yourself in your sea of moving boxes, you may discover that you are too tired to dig through boxes so you can get everyone ready for bed. These overnight bags are a lifesaver.
Keep valuables with you! Jewelry, IPads, Laptops, important documents such as birth records should be kept with you to prevent anything from getting lost or damaged. A portable safe is inexpensive and easily placed in the trunk of your car. Though you will probably have insurance on everything, money cannot replace things like your grandmother’s wedding ring or your wedding pictures. If it is personal keep it close to you.
